Triphala is an Ayurvedic botanical formula consisting of three fruits: Emblica officinalis (Amalaki), Terminalia belerica (Bihara), and Terminalia chebula (Harada). 3. Bihara (Terminalia belerica): Bihara targets imbalances associated with the Kapha dosha in Ayurvedic medicine, which corresponds to the earth and water elements. It helps purify and balance excess mucus and provides support in asthma, bronchial conditions, and allergies. Bihara contains high concentrations of linoleic acid and also helps bind bile acids. It has been shown to have antihelminthic properties, destroying intestinal worm parasites.
Triphala is not only considered a laxative but also a blood purifier, bile stimulant, liver and organ detoxifier, digestion and assimilation aid, intestinal tonic (due to anthraquinones and bitters), tonifier (due to vitamin C and essential fatty acids), and toxin eliminator. In vitro studies have shown that Triphala has antimicrobial properties against gastrointestinal pathogens such as Salmonella typhii, Shigella, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas, and Candida albicans.
