Product Description:

Melatonin promotes restorative sleep by helping to maintain or reset the circadian rhythm (the biological wake-sleep cycle) of the brain and body.

Although melatonin is not the primary regulator of normal sleep cycles, its influence is undeniable. The use of melatonin, alone or in combination with phototherapy, to treat sleep disorders is of considerable interest. It appears that melatonin levels are lower in elderly insomniacs compared to non-insomniacs of the same age, and melatonin therapy seems to provide modest benefits in such cases.

Shift workers, who face difficulties adapting to night shifts and the transition between sleep and daytime activity, are another group experiencing sleep disorders. The effectiveness of melatonin to relieve this problem remains equivocal and appears to be less effective than phototherapy. In many species, including humans, it has been demonstrated that melatonin administration decreases motor activity, induces fatigue, and lowers body temperature, particularly at high doses. This thermoregulatory effect plays a key role in melatonin's ability to synchronize wake-sleep cycles, notably to alleviate jet lag.

Biological Origin

The pineal gland, or epiphysis, produces and secretes melatonin, a simple hormone that communicates information about environmental light to the body. It contributes to the regulation of biological rhythms and plays a crucial role in the reproductive function of many animals. Located on the midline and attached to the posterior end of the roof of the third ventricle of the brain, the pineal gland resembles a small pine cone-shaped organ (hence its name).

Jet Lag

Jet lag is a disruption of the circadian rhythm. It has been repeatedly demonstrated that taking melatonin at the intended bedtime at your destination can alleviate symptoms, particularly when crossing multiple time zones. Travelers can use melatonin to counter the effects of flight on sleep quality. The goal is to synchronize your sleep rhythm with the normal hours of your destination.
